ANU Debating - Week 2 Updates

2/26/2017

Hi All,

Thank you for those who attended our Demo Debate last Tuesday! We were glad to see so many of you keen at learning more about debating.

Here are things happening this week,

Membership Payment
For those who have yet to pay the $15 annual membership fee, please find me (Julia) at Internal this Tuesday to pay.

Tuesday Internal
This Tuesday evening is our first internal of the year. Come and join us with some light food for a training session and a practice debate on Tuesday 28 February at 6 pm at Manning Clarke Theatre 2.

Remember to fill in the sign-up form, because Toni (our Internal VP) will use the information you submitted there to allocate you to the correct training session and to pair you up with people with similar debating experiences as you.

ESL Training Session
We are running supplementary training sessions for ESL debaters this semester. I am in charge of ESL Training, and this is the first year we are implementing the program. So I would like to gauge the interest and see what you would like to see in this program.

To be an ESL (English as Second Language) Speaker, you must have received a substantial period of your education in a language that is not English, or have lived for a substantial period of time in a country where the mainstream or official language is not English.

If you think this applies to you, and if you are interested in improving your debating skills in addition to the training sessions for all debaters on Tuesday evenings, please fill in this Expression of Interest form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdhr22F1LWhoUCobn2vtR_rUgfUzrKD5zIHwcqYDAO_yXrmSw/viewform

If we decide the number of expressions of interest is sufficient for our program, we will form a contact group for you to gain further information.

ANU Pro-Am
ANU's first weekend intensive of the year is happening this Sunday. This is the first chance you will get to debate with experienced members of our society and to make friends outside Tuesday internals.

The payment is $15 per person for a 3 round intensive on Sunday 5 March. The venue is HW Arndt Building (Opposite to College of Business and Economics and next to Copland Theatre/ Davey Lodge). The registration fee covers food for the day and a social afterward.

We are happy to see many who have already signed up. But we also need to receive a proof of payment of registration from you for us to register you on the list (unless you pay us in cash on the day). This means you need to take either a photo or a screenshot of your successful payment, and send it to anu.debating@gmail.com

To sign up, please go to: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSedHyCm5BjGjPBxVScrd0zzZtMWbfkeWZzZQg4ebM0sJaNcew/viewform

Account number: 0090 6371
BSB number: 062 903

Easters
Easters is the first national tournament happening in mid-April. It is your chance to compete on a wider platform and make friends who love debating from other institutions. We will have more updates on the trial for Easters closer to the event.

Lastly, Committee Photo
Some of you have requested for our photos to identify us. So I attached a screenshot of the demo debate slide I made for the committee member photos :)

See you all on Tuesday eve!

Regards,

Julia Liu
