Hi All,
Welcome to our latest members who joined us during Bush Week/ Week 1. For the rest of you, hope you are well rested over the holidays and excited for more debating this term! Internal Week 2 We are starting our first internal next Tuesday. This semester we will transition into the British Parliamentary style (BP), which is different from the 3 v 3 style we've learned before! Our trainer will briefly explain what a British Parliamentary debate looks like before we give you a demonstration debate by some of the very best talents in our society. Good food will be guaranteed. Date: Tuesday 1 August at 6pm (hot food) Venue: COP G030 One-day BP training Week 3 (internal) This internal training day will consist of 3 BP debates in one day, with topics designed by our experienced trainers and debaters. You will debate for two rounds and adjudicate for one round during the day, so by the end, you will learn both the preliminary skills of adjudicating and debating a BP debate. This training will take place on Saturday week 3, and we encourage everyone who would like to know a bit more about BP to come along! Date: Saturday 12 August Venue: TBC Note that since it is a one-day event, we will not provide lunch on the day. However, we will have walking parties to pop-up village for food, so you will have good company! Wom*n's Trial Week 4 Wom*n's is one of the largest debating tournaments in the Australasian region. And the most exciting thing is that this tournament is exclusive for debaters who identify as non-cis-male. This year, a special convenience is that the tournament is held on our very own campus, ANU :)! The dates and details can be found in the tournament schedule above and also on Facebook. Facebook page ANU AWDC 2017: https://www.facebook.com/ANU-AWDC-2017-1659565551026697/ The trial for Wom*n's will be in week 4 (14-18 August). So it's time to start planning and make sure that you will be available on most of the evenings during that week for a trial if you are keen to participate in the tournament. We will open the sign-up for wom*n's within the next couple of weeks, so get excited! Socials (Week 3-4) First-year social (chocolate!): if you are new to debating (joined us at any time this year), please feel free to come to the first-year exclusive social at Oliver Brown on the eve of Week 3 internal! There will be very good chocolate supplied by our society. Date: Tuesday 8 August after internal debate Event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1895615657343990/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%224%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22null%22%7D Wom*n's social: our Wom*n's officer Eli is organising Wom*n's social for the second semester. If you remember the lovely time you had at Wom*n's social in sem 1, don't forget to mark your calendar and sign up again this time :) Date: Week 4 Event page: tbc Semester 1 feedback Whether you have drifted or have stayed, we would like to hear from every single of you who has signed up to our mailing list in semester one about your experience with ANU Debating to improve how we are as a society and make sure you always feel welcome and included here. Please fill in this survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfLTrNgE2f1OhWNmH0fIX_1IbJPKXYiZYwt06m2mce5zOkl7g/viewform Sem 2 tournament schedule Our beloved trainer Jess Muz has compiled a list of mini and major debating tournaments that will happen in semester 2. Courtesy also to UQ Society's well-summarised calendar. USU Novice BP - 5th-6th Aug USU Novice BP is a *NOVICE ONLY* Tournament with some of the best pro's in the world as adjudicators. It's an excellent development tournament, and normally only attended by NSW Novices. If you're looking for one of the best BP development tournaments you can attend, this is a great option. UNSW IV - 19th-20th Aug UNSW IV is a Hypothetical/Open Motion tournament where you get to debate fantastic motions like "This House would wipe the slate clean" or "Assuming it were possible, This House would find Jesus guilty of the crimes of humanity" ANU Spring - 1st-3rd Sep This is one of the premiere Australian mini's, where the tournament normally fills registration in minutes. The skill range is incredibly diverse from novice teams to old hacks who have been in the public service for a few years. If you've got a quick clicking finger and can register in time this is one of the most popular mini's for a reason. USU IV - 16th-17th Sep This is the more serious response to UNSW IV, with high-quality teams and good motions. *Wom*ns - 22nd-25th Sep Although not a Mini, might be worth considering the date of if you're looking at attending this and a range of other mini's whilst not failing your courses. UTS IV - 18th-19th Nov This is UTS's response to USU's response to UNSW. Sydney just has a lot of debating societies. This is a good Worlds prep tournament. Melb Mini - 24th-25th Nov If you're done with Sydney and Canberra and fancy a trip to Melbourne this is also an excellent Worlds preparation tournament. Syd Mini (Australian BP Debating Championship) - 1st-3rd Dec This is the only Australian tournament that will get you an automatic invite to the exclusive HWS Round Robin. It's likely the top rooms in this tournament will be of equivalent or higher quality than the top rooms at the World Championships - so if you're serious about preparing for Worlds (or want one of the best learning experiences a tournament can provide) this is the tournament for you. *Worlds Universities Debating Championship - 26th-4th Dec/Jan Again, not a Mini, but worth considering the date of if you're looking for when you need to be prepared by if you're planning on attending. **POPULAR TOURNAMENTS WITHOUT ANY DATES** WSU BP Mac Mini QLD Mini Fictional IV If you wish to go to any of the mini tournaments on the list, but you do not know how, please feel free to contact us via email or in person! We will help you organise a team and transport. Hope you all have a productive week and can't wait to see you all at next Tuesday's internal :) Regards, Julia
